In a first, Mumbai police commissioner Dattatray Padsalgikar on Friday interacted live for one hour with people on Twitter using his Twitter handle @CPMumbaiPolice.

In the afternoon, the CP tweeted: “Any questions for me I will be answering them all between 5 and 6pm today #ChatWithCP.” The chat started at the appointed time and Rajiv Tandon asked where the common man should walk considering footpaths are encroached upon and roads are occupied by bumper-to-bumper traffic. CP replied that BMC was the concerned authority for removal of encroachment and he would take up the matter with the civic body.

To a question from Kabir Grewal as to why there was no security for women at Marine Drive, CP said women’s safety was their priority and policemen regularly patrolled the area even on bicycles. To a question as to when the number 100 would become entirely dependable, CP said that they received more than 15,000 calls every day on the number and they constantly strived to reduce response times.

When asked why police verification for common citizens takes weeks, CP said they were soon going to introduce an online verification system. CP answered as many questions as he could in one hour and most of the queries concerned traffic issues and safety. During the chat, CP revealed that he makes surprise visits to police stations at night.
