Court extends custody of youth who ‘left to join ISIS’

A special NIA court on Thursday extended Mohsin Shaikh’s police custody till June 30.

A special NIA court on Thursday extended Mohsin Shaikh’s police custody till June 30. Mohsin, a resident of Malwani, Malad had allegedly left home to join ISIS last year but the Delhi police arrested him and the NIA has brought him to Mumbai.

The NIA produced the case diary to the judge and claimed in the remand application that during interrogation Mohsin has divulged some new information and to confirm these details the investigating officers need to visit Agra and Lucknow and hence his custody should be extended.

However, Mohsin’s lawyer Sharif Shaikh objected to the application and said that he was already in the Delhi police custody in the same matter and hence his custody should not be extended.

After hearing the arguments, special NIA judge V.V. Patil extended the police custody for further eight days considering the seriousness of the crime.

The NIA has claimed that Mohsin has been involved in instigating and influencing Muslim youths in Malwani area on the instructions of his handlers based in Syria.

The investigating officers sought his 10-day police custody, saying it needed to retrieve all his chat records. The police alleged that he was in touch with the boys and his handlers in Syria via social media and they need to retrieve all the conversations.
