Cost of caring for recovered open spaces is Rs 243 crore

The civic body has decided to appoint ward-wise contractors for the development and maintenance of the recovered as well as undeveloped spaces, which include gardens, playgrounds, recreational grounds, open spaces, road dividers and other places in the city.

According to the civic officials, the process of taking possession of open spaces, which have been given under the previous adoption policy and whose agreement has already expired, is still on. After taking over the spaces, there is a need to maintain and develop them properly.

The BMC had invited e-tenders for a total 237 gardens, grounds and open spaces, two road dividers and five other places. The civic body had received 92 tenders from as many contractors for 23 wards. Of them, 21 contractors have been shortlisted by the civic gardens department.

“If the successful bidder has quoted 12 per cent less than the base price, he will have to deposit additional security deposit within seven days of getting the acceptance letter. He also has to provide performance bank guarantee for his works,” said a senior civic official. While the cost of maintaining recovered and undeveloped spaces in the island city area is 'Rs 41 crore, the cost for the same in Western and Eastern suburbs will be Rs 133 crore and Rs 67 crore respectively, BMC sources said.
