Corporators in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have sought explanation from the civic administration about the open spaces and gardens to be given for the Metro-III project by holding a special meeting.

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), which is implementing the project, has demanded 17 plots from the civic body for building the 33.5-km long line.

The civic body has proposed to allot these 17 plots to MMRCL for a 30-year period on the basis of market rate.

According to prevalent ready recknor rates, the BMC will collect Rs 287.52 crore from the MMRCL for this period.

After the 30-year time is over, the rent will be charged as per the prevalent market rates while renewing the lease.

The BMC’s proposal includes giving out several prominent open spaces, gardens, parking lots, a fire brigade centre land and an arm depot for the successful construction of Metro-III route.

They will be used for construction of metro stations, inward-outward rooms, ventilation shafts, godowns-depots and TBM launching purposes.

In the civic improvements committee on Tuesday, corporators raised objections over allotting the open spaces for the project.

MNS corporator Dilip Lande said, “At one point the BMC is developing open spaces, and at other seven gardens will be given for the construction for Metro-III project.”

“The civic body should develop these gardens at other spaces to maintain green cover,” he further added.

Congress corporator Mohsin Haider said the MMRCL should clear all objections raised by corporators about the use of open spaces and gardens.

“A special meeting should be held of MMRCL and civic officials to this end,” Mr Haider said.
