Corporators may soon be frisked before meetings

Frisking is all set to go beyond the realm of commoners entering public places; soon, corporators too will be frisked before entering committee meetings held at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). A proposal has been tabled before group leaders in the BMC, which allows frisking of all corporators before important meetings. What’s more, the proposal enables presence of marshalls outside meeting halls who will be authorised to accompany corporators out of meetings in the event they act “unruly”. The proposal also provides for mobile jammers to be installed in the premises of the BMC house, and will be discussed on Friday.
The proposal has been introduced by additional municipal commissioner Pallavi Darade to amend a bylaw of the MMC Act that talks about powers vested in the mayor. Ms Darade recalled an incident from February this year to justify the proposal. She said that during the Deonar dumping ground fires, the opposition party had staged a protest in the BMC house, and dumped a heap of garbage on the mayor's table. The Congress corporator directly responsible for the act, Nayana Seth, had been suspended for one day.
The proposal allows corporators’ bags to be checked before they enter meeting venues, mobile jammers to be put in place and marshals to aid the mayor in getting corporators to leave the room if they refuse to listen to her. It also allows the municipal commissioner to recommend disqualification of any corporator in case of unruly behaviour.
