In a letter written to the civic health committee, Congress corporator Sushama Salunkhe has said Mumbaikars face several health hazards owing to air pollution caused by large number of vehicles in the city. If the odd-even rule is implemented in the city, it would bring huge relief to citizens, she added.
“The air and noise pollution in the city is on the rise owing to increasing number of vehicles. It is posing a threat to the lives of the people in the city. Their life span is getting reduced. On this backdrop, if the odd-even rule is implemented in Mumbai on the lines of Delhi, it would help a long way in reducing pollution in the city,” said Ms Salunkhe.
Her demand comes on the heels of the Delhi government’s pollution control plan, in which vehicles having odd and even numbers are allowed on city roads only on alternate days. The experiment, which ended on January 15, also received a good response from Delhites. The Delhi transport minister has said that the scheme will be back for a second phase.
“The proposal, if approved by the health committee, will be sent to the department concerned for its opinion,” said a civic official.
