Hema Upadhyay murder: Cops still struggle to gather evidence
Even after 20 days since the double murder of artist Hema Upadhyay and advocate Haresh Bhambani came to light, officials are still struggling to get concrete evidence. Two days ago, an advocate, on behalf of Chintan Upadhyay, deceased Hema’s estranged husband, approached the court and complained about the use of third degree torture on Chintan.
On Wednesday, Chintan was taken to JJ Hospital for a medical test. Police officials are saying that medical reports of Chintan are negative to claims of third degree torture. The idea of conducting a medical test was allegedly implemented to keep Chintan away from the police for a day. Officials are already upset over non-cooperation by Chintan. He will be produced in the court on Friday. Officials fear that the court will send him to judicial custody.
The police plans to use the loss of a day for the medical test as a ground to seek further custody saying that their investigation was interrupted. According to police sources, officials are planning to demand a narco test on Chintan to find out about his involvement in the double murder. Officials have questioned him several times during custody, but so far Chintan has allegedly only given ‘yes’ and ‘no’ answers.
On Thursday, the statement of Chintan’s father Vidhyasagar Upadhyay was recorded. He has informed the police that he met main accused Vidhyadhar only twice and for a few minutes. Vidhyasagar said that he worked in the fibre glass field and Chintan had not been associated with fibre glass for the past four years, so there was no scope of them meeting often.
A police source informed The Asian Age that before absconding, accused Vidhyadhar called a lawyer and asked him about the provisions of surrendering in court. Officials suspect that Vidhyadhar is likely to surrender as four accused are in judicial custody and Chintan is likely to be sent to judicial custody on Friday.
According to sources, the police has deployed its teams on every spot where Vidhyadhar could hide and once he comes out, he will be nabbed.
