The cyber wing of the Mumbai police has started a programme called “Cyber safety in the age of social media” for school teachers to spread awareness among students. The first batch of 400 teachers has already completed sessions on cybercrime safety.
A cyber cell police official said, “Internet has changed the world and the people. Nowadays, everyone is Internet savvy. By typing just a few words into a computer, it is possible to find information on any subject. There are so many things that people and even children can do on the Internet. Social media is also part of this school subject. Children as well as adults and older people are very much into social media but they never look into the safety of their profiles and accounts on the Internet.”
He added, “Within the last ten months, 748 cases have been registered under cybercrime that are related to social media alone. These cases include blackmailing, hacking, phishing, tampering of the source card, fraud email and so many other crimes. Among these, 178 crimes have been detected so far and we have realised that 60 per cent cases involve children, especially those below 18 years. Therefore, we decided to take sessions for teachers so that they can lecture children on the same. We requested them to keep exams for the same. So, we have called teachers from every school. In the last week, during our first teaching session, there were 400 teachers present for the session. The teachers also told us that that they feel under-qualified to educate children about cyber safety.”
DCP crime branch and Mumbai police spokesperson Dhananjay Kulkarni said, “We are teaching how to take safety measures like security of accounts, remove unwanted posts, safely download games and applications, safe sharing and posting, identifying fraud etc. We will continue with our awareness drive to curb cyber crime.”
