Cops to keep an eye on Deonar

On Sunday, the Deonar police again detained four ragpickers. Meanwhile, the 13 accused who have been arrested in the last two days were given judicial custody till April 30

In the joint meeting of BMC officials and police officials, it was decided that a team from three police stations will keep tabs on Deonar dumping ground and will take necessary action if necessary.

According to final circular of the meeting, one PI and one PSI, including five police constables, will keep check on the dumping ground everyday. On Sunday night, Deonar police officials arrested four youngsters who were lighting the garbage after which they were released by the Kurla court on Monday after paying a fine of Rs 5,000.

The 13 accused who were arrested in the last two days were sent to judicial custody till April 30 on Monday.

The Shivaji Nagar police station, which had two offences, registered with them, arrested 13 people. The accused are scrap dealers all residents of slums behind the dumping ground, who would allegedly set fire to the garbage dumped so as to procure metal from it.

Police till now just have statements of small children who are rag pickers; otherwise they don’t have any proof against the arrested accused. Families of the accused are alleging that the few persons among the 13 arrested accused were not in the town for past two months to light the fire or to encourage ragpickers to do the same act.
