The cyber crime cell is on the lookout for a person who duped people of lakhs by impersonating a TV actor. He had created a fake Facebook account in the name of the actor and requested people to help his group which was involved in helping poor children, the police said. The cyber crime cell has registered a complaint against the accused and is searching for him.
Police officials said the accused created the fake profile in the name of the complainant actor Paras Madan. The accused then chatted with a few of the actor’s acquaintances and asked for financial aid for an event company, which he maintained had been established to help poor children.
Officials said that when a few of the complainants’ friends and well-wishers found another account in the actor’s name, they approached him and told him about the same. Following this, the complainant filed a complaint with the cyber crime cell unit, the police said. “We have registered a case under CrPC 14/16 under section 419 (punishment for cheating by impersonation), 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment of IPC) and 66 C of IT Act (fraudulently or dishonestly making use of the electronic signature, password or any other unique identification feature of any other person, shall be punished).”
