Three crime branch officers on Monday happened to chance upon and rescue a man who was being stabbed by an auto driver. The victim, who is in the Sion Hospital ICU currently, was knifed 44 times. The accused was arrested immediately.
The policemen were investigating a case near Govandi railway station around 2 pm on Monday, when Sandeep Durgade, a constable with the Deonar police station, heard screams.
Recalling the incident, Mr Durgade, said, “I was passing by the railway station when I heard someone screaming. Heading in the direction of the wails, I saw a person stabbing someone. By the time I approached the accused, two of my colleagues reached the spot and eventually brought him under control. The officials took the victim to Shatabdi Hospital and he was later shifted to Sion Hospital. We escorted the accused in a police car to Deonar police station.”
The accused has been identified as Istiyak Ahmad Iqbal Shaikh, a 35-year-old resident of Gautam Nagar, Govandi. The victim, Faiyaz Isaq Qureshi, also 35 years old, has been Shaikh’s neighbour for seven years.
Speaking about the men, Deonar police officials said Shaikh’s statement claimed that Qureshi and he resided in the same society and he wanted to be the society’s president, but Qureshi had allegedly defamed him and was trying to get members to vote for him, which angered Shaikh.”
A police office said, “ We are yet to take proper statements of the accused and the victim. A witness named Mohommad Yusuf Shaikh, who is rickshaw driver, told us that Shaikh had a dominating personality. He assaulted Qureshi at a rickshaw stand near the railway station. Shaikh, after taking out a knife from his vehicle, started stabbing Qureshi. After piercing Qureshi’s hand, Shaikh went on to inflict wounds all over his body and kept at it until the police intervened. Other rickshaw drivers fled the scene of the crime. We will take down Qureshi statement once he recovers. We have called members of their society tomorrow to record their statements.”
The police has registered case against the Shaikh and arrested him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
