The Antop Hill police on Thursday arrested a woman for allegedly kicking her three-year-old boy to death. The child’s incessant crying had, reportedly, angered her.

According to the police, the woman, Asma Shaikh (24), lived with her son Umaire at Antop Hill. According to the police, on August 3, Asma rushed her son to Sion Hospital, claiming that he was not responding despite repeated efforts to wake him up. “She told the doctors that on the evening of August 2 Umaire returned home from play and she fed him a banana and he went to sleep. After this, she said, he did not wake up and she brought him to the hospital,” said a police source.

The hospital, which declared the boy dead on arrival, informed the Antop Hill police and the latter registered an accidental death case. “The forensic experts conducted a post-mortem and found that the child had a ruptured spleen. They pointed this out to the police and said this could be a result of violence,” said an officer.

He added that the post-mortem report stated that the banana had not been digested completely, meaning the death had occurred right on the spot.

Following this, the police summoned Asma, her fiancé Mukhtar and her sister for an inquiry since they were all allegedly present in the house on August 2. “All of them said the same story that Asma had told the doctors. But later, during interrogations, Asma broke down and confessed she had kicked the child at home after he threw a tantrum and refused to let her go to the nearby shop to buy medicines,” said a senior police officer.

He added that Umaire kept holding on to Asma’s leg, claiming he had a fever and asking her to not leave him. She then slapped him and kicked him in the abdomen.
