A police inspector with the Mumbai police has been arrested by the Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while allegedly accepting a bribe from an accused on Thursday. The ACB has initiated further inquiries into the source of the money.
According to ACB officials, the accused is a police inspector Divakar Sawant with the Aarey police station in northern Mumbai. A case had been registered in the police station regarding illegal slums and personal fights amongst them. Sawant was the investigation officer in the case. Some of the accused in the accused had applied for anticipatory bail.
ACB, DCP RR Bhogle said, “The said officer then asked for bribe to cooperate in verification of solvent sureties for the anticipatory bail. Sawant asked for Rs 50,000 from three in a case registered against them at the police station. The complainant approached us alleging that Sawant was demanding '50,000 in exchange for verification of solvent sureties. We verified his claims and then set about laying a trap. Then on Thursday, the complainant took first payment of '25,000 and handed it over to the Sawant when we arrested him red-handed.”
The ACB will now conduct a detailed evaluation of the value of Sawant’s assets and compare it against his income to check if there are enough grounds to register a disproportionate assets case.
