Contest over credit for beautification project

In a game of one-upmanship, the beautification project under the Nanalal D. Mehta flyover at Matunga will witness two inaugurations. The first will be arranged by local Congress corporator, Nayana Sheth, on Sunday and the second official one by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday.

BMC has carried out beautification of space available under the flyover with a small garden and a jogging track. Local residents however were baffled when they received two invites for the inauguration. The first one – organised by Ms Sheth – will be carried out by Congress MLA, Kalidas Kolambkar, on Sunday at 10.30am. Whereas, official inauguration will be done by mayor Snehal Ambekar in the presence of environment minister Ramdas Kadam on Monday at 5pm.

Ms Sheth has also put up nameplates near the inauguration site, claiming that the project has been completed due to her persistent efforts. “I have pursued this issue for several years, due to which the beautification has been done. I want local people to know the work I have been doing,” she said. The Congress corporator also alleged that Shiv Sena was trying to take credit for her work. “Sena’s Shailesh Phanse inaugurated the gardens works in his ward himself. BJP corporator Phanguni Dave did the inauguration herself in her ward. But when it comes to opposition corporators, ruling parties are trying to grab credit for their work. Even in the case of Five Gardens, Sena invited Uddhav Thackeray for inauguration while the project was done due to my efforts,” Ms Sheth added. However, residents are unimpressed with these antics. “The fact that the corporator is knowingly carrying out the inauguration a day prior to the official function, is an insult to the mayor.,” said civic activist, Nikhil Desai.
