Demanding the resignation of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on the eve of the completion of one year of the BJP-led government in the state, the Congress lambasted him for “failure at all levels.” The party also released a booklet highlighting “failure” of the state government and expressed doubt if it will complete its five-year term.

Maharashtra Congress president Ashok Chavan on Friday said the state was staring at political instability, which was making an impact in decision-making and administration in the BJP-led government. Addressing a press conference to release the booklet ‘Dishahin karun thevlay Maharashtra Majha’ (Maharashtra has been rendered directionless), Mr Chavan said if BJP and Sena are not capable of honoring the mandate given to them by the people, Congress is ready to face the challenge.

Leader of Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said, “The chief minister should resign from the government as he has failed to tackle problems like farmers’ suicide, drought situation and maintenance of law and order.” He also demanded that Fadnavis resign owning moral responsibility for his government’s failures.

Criticising the foreign trips taken by the CM, Mr Patil said the state had lost its first position in industrial progress. “Despite Mr Fadnavis’s frequent foreign trips to boost investments, Maharashtra has come down from number 1 position to number 8,” he claimed, adding that the chief minister should take inspiration from his Gujarat counterpart “who instead of going to foreign countries visits Mumbai and takes away industries from the state to Gujarat.”

Under the Fadnavis government, Maharashtra has lost direction, Mr Chavan alleged, saying that the need of the hour was to write off the loan of farmers to help them tide over the agrarian crisis. “However, economic progress of farmers is not in the list of priorities of the government,” Mr Chavan alleged. Due to misplaced priorities, the government scrapped local body tax and toll in urban areas and hiked taxes across the state, he said.
