Alleging that the state government is not taking adequate measures to tackle drought, Congress state president Ashok Chavan said that 3.5 crore people in the state are affected by the calamity. The Congress leaders would be visiting the drought-stricken areas from May 5 to 7 to review the plight of the people, he said.
“It is sad that the state government is not serious about the drought and is not taking sufficient measures to control the situation. No new employment guarantee scheme (EGS) works are approved, tankers are fewer in number and the tanker mafias are influential,” Referring to Pankaja Munde’s recent selfie controversy, the Congress leader said, “The ministers are busy taking selfies and their helicopter visit becomes controversial. There were 3,224 farmers suicide in 2015, but the government is not taking adequate measures to tackle drought.” Stating that 21 districts are affected by drought, he said each Congress leader would cover one district and check if the people are getting adequate help from the government. The Marathwada region is facing severe condition as only four per cent of water storage is left.
Mr Chavan also lashed out at the government over inflated prices of pulses. “The government says that crores of rupees were used to control pulses prices. But the prices have not gone down. Then where did the funds go ” he asked.
The Congress leader also announced that the party would launch a campaign for tribal people alleging that BJP government is snatching their rights. Intending to protect their rights, the Congress has organised Vanhakka Parishad on May 2 at Nashik, Mr Chavan added.
Pointing at one of the government resolutions, Mr Chavan said that the collectors are being asked to meet opposition leaders only once.
“The government is trying to suppress opposition parties by issuing such orders. The government also said that the officials should not attend meetings with the opposition leaders,” he said.
The issue was also raised during the Budget Session of legislature where NCP leader Jayant Patil said that how the government officials are being restricted from meeting opposition leaders.
