Congress leader held for assaulting policemen

The Malabar Hill police arrested Arjun Jadhav, general secretary of Congress’ youth wing for allegedly assaulting two police constables while in an inebriated state in the early hours on Saturday.

The Malabar Hill police arrested Arjun Jadhav, general secretary of Congress’ youth wing for allegedly assaulting two police constables while in an inebriated state in the early hours on Saturday. He was later released on bail.

Jadhav, 25, allegedly assaulted constable Vishnu Sagvekar at around 2.30 am on Saturday. Police officials said Sagvekar went to the spot after the beat marshal unit of Malabar hill police station received a call around midnight from some residents that some drunken youths were fighting among themselves near IDBI bank ATM of Nepean Sea road.

Sagvekar’s colleagues followed him to the spot when the constable, who is from Malbar Hill police station, who was on his night duty.

The Malabar Hill station police officials said, “ Our constable rushed to the spot following a phone call stating a group of drunken people was fighting among themselves. When Sagvekar asked the group to stop fighting and go home, at that time accused Jadhav got violent and started abusing the constable. He later assaulted Sagvekar by punching him and other constables who reached the spot rushed to help him. Jadhav was taken into custody.”

Mr Sagvekar said, “ I was trying to tell them ‘please don’t create a nuisance at night, everyone is sleeping’. At that time Arjun (Jadhav) came towards me and started abusing me in foul language and I warned him to stop it. At that time he told me ‘do whatever you want, you don’t know who I am’ and started beating me. My colleagues came and saved me.”

A case under Section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and he was released on Rs 15,000 cash surety. The constable, who suffered back and internal injuries, has been told to rest for the next 10 days.
