After Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray’s announcement that all Sena corporators, party workers and even ‘shakha pramukhs’ will oversee nullah desilting work in the city, the Congress has decided to contribute to the pre-monsoon inspections in the city. Leader of the Opposition Pravin Chheda announced in the BMC on Wednesday that he would accompany ward-level officials for all desilting work inspections in the city.

Mr Chheda also alleged the ruling party has lost all control over its own administration, if leader of the House Trushna Vishwasrao, who is by default the leading the ruling party in the BMC, cannot ensure whether desilting of nullahs in her own ward has been completed. Mr Chheda openly challenged the Sena to prove its hold over its own civic government. Meanwhile, Sanjay Nirupam, Mumbai Congress president, said, “The Shiv Sena is turning its back on the people who have elected them. Mumbaikars did not elect the Sena so that its party chief can wash his hands off all responsibility in governing the city.” Mr Nirupam also lashed out at BJP, accusing it of playing the role of the Opposition despite being Sena’s coalition partner. He demanded the BJP also play an equal role in inspecting the desilting work and bear the responsibility in case of a deluge again this year.

Mr Chheda said, “Unlike the Sena, we are not shirking away from our responsibility as the Opposition in the BMC. Corporators from the Congress party will visit all nullahs from their respective wards to oversee the operations”
