While the four law colleges in the city that were allegedly derecognised by the Bar Council of India (BCI), have said they are yet to receive an official communication over the same from the BCI or University of Mumbai, principals of other colleges said they would form an association and challenge the BCI’s authority over legal institutions.
The affected colleges, which are aided, maintained they are in no position to comment as it is the government that decides for them. They said they would decide on the course of action only after receiving the communication on de-recognition.
The BCI in a meeting held recently had decided to derecognise four city-based colleges — Government Law College, KC College of Law, Advani Law College and JC College of Law — for not conforming to either “infrastructural or faculty norms.”
However, Kavita Lalchandani, principal of Advani and Anil Singh, principal of JC Law College, said, “There is no communication hence it is difficult for us to comment on the BCI’s decision. This situation will only lead to further delay in the admission process that is already lagging behind.”
Principals of other colleges however had a mixed reaction. “We are awaiting clarity on the issue from the BCI or the MU. Only after it is confirmed will we be able to comment on the next course of action,” said Dr Narayan Rajadhyaksha, principal of New Law College.
But Sudhakar Reddy, principal of Siddharth Law College, did not mince words while criticising the decision of the BCI. “This is an absolutely unreasonable and baseless decision by the BCI. The BCI may have a say in the curriculum being taught in the institutions but they have no right to interfere in the administration of the institutions. We are forming an association of law colleges and will challenge the locus standi of the BCI,” said Mr Reddy.
