The Congress has demanded the resignation of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis over the fire mishap that took place during a cultural programme at Girgaum Chowpatty in the ‘Make in India Week’ (MMIW) events.

The blaze had gutted the stage when the cultural programme ‘Maharashtra Rajani’ was being held at Girgaum Chowpatty seafront on Sunday night. Raising the issue in the civic general body meeting, opposition leader Devendra Amberkar from Congress said the mishap has brought disgrace to the state and also the country. “The CM should accept the moral responsibility for the fire and step down,” he said.

Making a statement in the civic house, Mr Amberkar said, the mishap happened due to bad planning.

The apex court had laid down certain terms and conditions while allowing the event at the chowpatty, but the state government did not follow them and thus violated the SC directives, he said. He added that the government should be held responsible for the mishap.

“If a fire takes place, a panchnama is held. However, on this occasion, the fire site was cleaned up immediately without holding the panchnama. It seems that there was a pressure on the fire brigade in this matter,” Mr Amberkar said.

Congress corporator Waqarunissa Ansari said that such a dangerous fire had never been witnessed at Girgaum Chowpathy before. “All inflammatory materials like wood, cloth were used at the venue despite permissions being denied by the fire brigade,” she added.

The MNS group leader Sandeep Deshpande alleged that fire safety norms were not followed during the event. No fire officer would have the courage to deny permissions to an event of such a nature or remove faults at a time when there were so many VVIPs present for the event, he said.
