Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has asked all the district collectors to submit a report on the source of water that is used by breweries in the state.
Confirming the development, Mr Fadnavis said, “I have asked the all the district collectors to update me by submitting a report by gathering information on all internal and external sources of water for breweries in the state and once I have the report a further decision will be taken on stopping water supply to these factories within the next two or three days.”
Breweries are beer-manufacturing factories where beer is made for commercial use and most of the beer manufacturing factories are in Aurangabad. Also, it is said that for manufacturing one litre of beer, five litres of water is needed.
Mr Fadnavis added that “the decision of stopping supply of water will not have to go through the Cabinet and the government will independently take the decision on stopping water supply.”
Maharashtra is home to many big beer-manufacturing factories, including United Breweries Limited and Carlsberg, which have their factories in Aurangabad. The Opposition Congress had also demanded stopping of water supply to all liquor and beer-manufacturing units. The state is facing serious drought problems where villagers have to walk miles to fetch water.
The state has also taken measures like ensuring water supply to worst-hit Latur district where the state government is supplying five-lakh litres of water by a special train.
