CM Devendra Fadnavis leaves opposition tongue-tied in legislature

It was chief minister Devendra Fadnavis who stood out in the first week of the Monsoon Session of the state Legislature.

It was chief minister Devendra Fadnavis who stood out in the first week of the Monsoon Session of the state Legislature. He celebrated his birthday in style by not only flooring the Opposition, but also neutralising the threat of senior Congress leader Narayan Rane.

Before the beginning of session, Mr Fadnavis and his BJP-led government was facing flak for its inept handling of demolition of Ambedkar Bhavan at Dadar in Mumbai and the brutal rape and murder of a 15-year old girl in Kopardi village at Ahmednagar district. However, Mr Fadnavis came out unscathed.

He volleyed the criticism of Opposition parties on law and order and corruption. The main highlight, however, was the scathing counterattack on Mr Rane.

While speaking on the Kopardi rape and murder case, Mr Rane made a personal attack on the CM, saying that he should step down for failing to maintain law and order in the state. The BJP has become a party of goons, he alleged.

In a fitting reply, Mr Fadnavis cited the series of offences registered in Sindhudurg district against Mr Rane. “Who should call whom a ‘goon,’ I don’t understand. Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones at others,” he quipped.

Referring to Mr Rane’s alleged involvement in a land matter at Kondhwa in Pune, he also sent a veiled warning that action will be taken as per the recommendations of the law and judiciary department.
