Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union water resources minister Uma Bharti conducted aerial surveillance of the Tapi River Mega Recharge Project, which is implemented in Jalgaon district, on Sunday.

The project, which aims to recharge the ground water table, is unique and can percolate about 80 TMC water. The ministers, accompanied by state minister Girish Mahajan, also visited wells that had sunk into the dry riverbed in Lohare village of Raver tehsil of Jalgaon.

Raver MP Raksha Khadse, Burhanpur (MP) MLA Archana Chitnis, MLA Haribhau Jawale, Union water resources secretary Amarjeet Singh, ZP CEO Asthikkumar Pande, Tapi Valley Development Corporation officials and others were also present.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Mahajan said the Tapi River Mega Recharge Project would prove to be a novel project. “About 70 to 80 TMC will be percolated in the ground through this project without displacing people. Both the Central and state governments are enthusiastic about the project and are working jointly,” he said.

Earlier, the ministers began their tour in the morning by helicopter. They flew over the stretch of Tapi traversing through the Satpuda mountain range till Aner reservoir. They then visited the reservoir built over the Suki.

Under this project, 10 wells are sunk in the bed of the Suki at various places. Water from the Suki is being released in the wells. The water percolates through the murum and rocks, and increases the ground water table in the area. It also avoids excess water flowing away as waste.
