A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official was grievously injured after an angry mob attacked him while he was on duty during a demolition drive carried out around the Tansa pipeline in Kurla on Friday.

The victim, Dharmendra Yadav, was hit on his head during the drive and was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar. He was discharged from the hospital after undergoing treatment for his injuries. The civic body is in the process of lodging a police complaint with the Nehru Nagar police station in this regard.

The demolition drive, which has been going on for the past three days, saw about 700 illegal hutments demolished up to about 10 metres on either side of the Tansa pipeline. During Friday’s demolition drive, a mob of 10 to 15 people attacked the team of BMC officials and JCB controller Yadav sustained head injuries. After this incident, the M (West) ward has temporarily halted all demolition in the area.

The BMC has been carrying out these demolitions on the basis of a high court order, for security purposes of the pipeline, as well as to free up access space for repair of the pipeline. Meanwhile, the BMC has provided alternate accommodation to those houses that are eligible for it.

Harshad Kale, assistant commissioner of the M (West) ward, said, “Despite this, those who have been given alternate accommodation accept it, take possession of the new house but continue to live here.”

During the three-day drive, the BMC demolished a total of 725 structures, of which they demolished 227 on the first day, 430 on the second, and 37 on the third day.
