As part of a long-term measure to deal with solid waste in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will set up biomethanisation plants at about 10 sites across Mumbai. Even though the civic body has identified all plots for setting up these plants, the project is presently stuck in the proposal stage, as most of these plots are situated on the premises of top municipality-run hospitals or schools.
An official from the civic solid waste management department said, “We are in talks with key hospitals to let us set up this plant on their premises. We have only identified open areas that can accommodate this project; the rest depends on permissions from these institutions.” However, the BMC has maintained that the plants are safe and will release no foul smell. They will use up very little space, depending on the amount of garbage that will be processed there.
Even though the fate of the crucial project is linked to permissions from institutions like Nair Hospital and KEM Hospital, presently the BMC is planning to set up two or three plants on the premises of pumping stations such as the Lovegrove pumping station, whose land is owned by the BMC itself.
Apart from this, the BMC has confirmed use of three plots this project, one of which lies in the M–East ward, and is presently being used as a bulldozer garage; the second lies in the K–West ward and is presently being used by Ajil glass factory, and the third lies in the R–Central ward near the Gorai landfill closure site’s refuse transfer station. The solid waste management department will prepare short tenders for this site.
