The civic health department has now confirmed the first four cases and 20 probable cases of chikungunya in the city in the period between October 1 to October 12, according to a health report released on Thursday.
The civic health report stated that the three cases of chikungunya are from G-North which is the Dadar (west) area, while the second case is from the M-east ward that is the Govandi-Chembur area.
Dengue and chikungunya are both transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The BMC report also showed 5,798 cases of fever, 238 cases of malaria, 102 cases of confirmed dengue, 18 cases of leptospirosis cases, 200 cases of gastroentritis and 35 cases of hepatitis had been recorded so far. The report further mentioned that the probable cases of dengue in the city is 1,813.
Mini Khetrapal, in-charge of BMC’s epidemiology department, said, “Between October 1 and 12, four people have tested positive for chikungunya, while 20 probable cases were also detected. Mosquito-breeding proliferates in the post-monsoon months as pools of stagnant rainwater are formed everywhere.”
Dr Dilip Patil, practising general physician said, “The symptoms of Chikungunya are joint pains , rashes , fever and vomiting. Even pain killers fail to work in such instances. When a person notices such symptoms, he or she should immediately seek medical advice and get the required tests done, namely IGM and IGG. Self medication should be avoided at all costs.
