Even as certain media reports have suggested that underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and his family members have been making calls to certain politicians and high profile individuals in India, the Mumbai police has denied the same.
The reports cite data accessed by an ethical hacker who hacked into the official website of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), a telecom company partially owned by the government. The reports said the number shown in the data was owned by Dawood’s wife Mehjabeen Shaikh and was officially registered under the address of Dawood’s mansion in Karachi, Pakistan.
The phone records for four telephone numbers from Dawood’s mansion allegedly reveal many calls to India, especially Mumbai. The records allegedly also point out that Dawood had made quite a few calls to highly-placed ministers in Maharashtra. While the name of the ministers have not been revealed, the records are said to reveal that Dawood had made frequent calls to the said number. When contacted, the Mumbai police, which has been on the trail of Dawood for many years now, denied having any such information.
Sources with access to such information said they had started looking into the matter after news reports broke out. “While we don’t have access to the said data being quoted by the news agencies, we checked some of the intelligence we had gathered. We cannot reveal what all was found but can say that there was no such evidence of calls to high-profile individuals,” said the source.
When asked whether the Mumbai police would be conducting a parallel investigation, the source said it was too soon to comment. “We only have media reports informing us about these phone records,” said an officer on condition of anonymity.
