CII yet to pay BMC for removing fire debris

The task of removing waste from the fire site at the Make In India Week (MIIW) event at Girgaum Chowpatty has cost the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Rs 8 lakh.

The task of removing waste from the fire site at the Make In India Week (MIIW) event at Girgaum Chowpatty has cost the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Rs 8 lakh.

However, there has been no reimbursement made to the civic body from the organisers Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) so far.

The massive blaze had gutted the entire stage at the cultural programme ‘Maharashtra Rajani,’ organised by CII and event management firm Wizcraft, as a part of the MIIW events at Girgaum Chowpatty seafront on February 14.

As per a Right To Information (RTI) query filed by activist Anil Galgali, the BMC spent Rs 8,06,952 for clearing and removal of waste from the fire spot.

It was cleaned the next morning with the help of 10 JCBs, 39 dumpers (67 trips), two compactors, 198 labour staff and 80 supervisory staff in two shifts. Almost 315 metric tonnes of debris and waste was removed from the site, for which D ward office used its own machinery and staff.

According to the civic officials, since it was the duty of the event organiser to clear the site, the BMC in a letter sent to CII on February 22 asked them to reimburse the cost within seven days.

However, there has been no response from the organisers so far.
