The Nagpada police on Tuesday morning arrested a man who allegedly kidnapped the two-year-old son of a neighbour, as he was childless himself, and fled the city. The child has been returned to his mother.

The accused, identified as Kadir Khan, lived near the mother of the child, Rubina Shaikh (28), to whom he is related. Ms Shaikh has three boys and they used to play at Khan’s home.

According to the Nagpada police, on Sunday the children were playing near their house when Khan came and told the eldest boy to take his younger brother to a nearby restaurant and inquire about the day’s menu. When two elder children left, Khan took hold of their infant brother Sadam and fled.”

Speaking about the case, ACP Mangesh Potte said, “Ms Shaikh came to the police station and filed a kidnapping complaint. Her eldest son told us about the restaurant story and how when they returned Sadam had gone missing along with their uncle. Later all family members searched for Khan, but when he could not be traced they came to the police station. We then called Khan from a new number, which is when he said, ‘I am taking Sadam and I will take care of him. Rubina has three children. I don’t have one, so I have a right on Sadam.’”

The police managed to trace Khan, after which a team from Mumbai left for Nashik where a trap was laid.
