Chhota Rajan applies for bail
Underworld don Chhota Rajan’s lawyer has filed an application for bail in a special MCOCA court at Arthur Road Jail on Wednesday. However, hearing has been adjourned and will continue on April 20.
Rajan’s lawyer, Avinash Kamkhelkar, said that they have filed a bail plea in the MCOCA court on Wednesday as CBI’s investigation is going on very slowly, owing to which Rajan is suffering and as a result, may have to remain behind bars for a longer period.
Gangster Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje alias Chhota Rajan was arrested from Bali in November last year and brought to Delhi and lodged at Tihar Jail.
Trial of the Jyotirmoy Dey murder case is underway at the MCOCA court in Mumbai. Mr Dey, tabloid Midday’s crime and investigation editor, 56, was gunned down in Powai in broad daylight in 2011, allegedly at Rajan’s behest.
The Maharashtra police has registered a total 71 cases against Rajan, 68 of them being in Mumbai, under various laws such as Indian Penal Code and the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). At least six out of the 68 are serious criminal cases against Rajan where the Mumbai police has secured a conviction and MCOCA has been applied.
