A few residents from the Charkop area have reported an online fraud where money was withdrawn from their account at an online shopping portal, though they claimed to have not accessed any such website.
Police officials said , about a week ago, three to four complainants had already received their money back and others were in the process of getting it back after they handed over a police verified affidavit to the bank concerned.
Officials are now investigating how the fraud took place, and if necessary will seek help from the cyber team of the city police.
According to police sources, as many as 42 residents of Charkop fell prey to the fraud. On June 18, these people at different times visited the ATM machine of Union Bank, which is situated in the Charkop market. After inserting the ATM card in the slot, when they would punch in their ATM pin with the amount to be withdrawn, they would get no response from the ATM. Believing that the machine was out of cash, the complainants had left. According to sources, later the complainants got SMSes on their mobile number, which was registered with the bank, claiming that a huge sum had been withdrawn from their account.
The complainants in their complaint informed the police that according to the message, money was withdrawn on an international online shopping portal to purchase luxury products.
A few complainants also said the ATM centre was not guarded by a security guard and thus it was possible the machine was hacked. “Earlier, we got a few complaints but now we have many complaints about this fraud and the pattern was the same. Money would not appear, and then it would be debited via a e-shopping. We are investigating the case,” said a top official from the Charkop police station.
