CBI may set up Mumbai cyber crime branch
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is considering opening a cyber crime investigation branch in Mumbai and is in talks with the state government to work out the modalities.
According to CBI director Anil Sinha, economic offences and cyber crimes are on the rise and Mumbai — being the commercial and financial capital of India — was an appropriate place to have a cyber investigation facility.
“The CBI has investigated over 20 cyber cases in the past few months, but presently the facility is centralised in New Delhi. We are in talks with the state government and the Maharashtra police to work out the nitty-gritty,” said the director.
According to Mr Sinha, these days, apart from corruption and other serious crimes, economic offences and cyber crimes are also increasing.
“The tech-savvy population conducts financial transactions and social networking online. So, having a special wing of the cyber crime cell is the need of the hour,” he said.
Mr Sinha further said that the agency is considering setting up a cyber crime investigation branch at Mumbai.
The state government of Maharashtra has been requested to notify the CBI to take up the investigation of offences under the Information Technology Act 2000.
