Three years since the murder of rationalist Dr Narendra Dabholkar, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) made its first arrest in the case on late Friday evening. The CBI arrested Dr Virendra Tawade of Hindu Janjagran Sansthan and a staunch follower of Sanatan Sanstha.

The CBI had, on June 1, conducted a search at the residences of Dr Tawade and Sarang Akolkar at Panvel and Pune in Maharashtra, respectively.

During the search, the CBI recovered documents and cellphone numbers and e-mails, which were scrutinised. On Friday, CBI officials called Dr Tawade for interrogation and arrested him after he was unable to provide satisfactory clarifications.

According to a press release issued by CBI, Dr Tawade and Akolkar also had links with the Goa blast and were both in touch via email for a long time.

According details given by a Sanatan Sanstha worker earlier, Dr Tawade used to practice in Mumbai’s JJ Hospital. He later left the hospital and frequently visited the Sanatan Sanstha ashram close to his home in Panvel.
