CBI court denies Peter’s plea against framing of charges

A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in the city on Monday rejected the application filed by former media baron Peter Mukerjea opposing court proceedings for framing of charges.

A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in the city on Monday rejected the application filed by former media baron Peter Mukerjea opposing court proceedings for framing of charges. The court fixed October 5 for the prosecution to begin arguments on charges against the accused, including prime accused Indrani Mukerjea.

Special CBI judge H.S. Mahajan in his order said that two accused, i.e. Indrani and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna, had been behind bars for more than a year now. “Both the accused are ready and willing to argue the case. In such circumstances, it is not desirable to cause delay,” said the judge and rejected the application filed by Peter’s lawyer Mihir Gheewala opposing the framing of charges on the ground that the investigating agency should first make a statement that the probe in the case was over and it would not rely upon any more documents during the trial.

Mr Gheewala had contended before the court that the probe in the case was still on and charges should not be framed against the accused unless the CBI makes a statement that no new documents would be relied upon after framing of charges.

Special CBI prosecutors Bharat Badami along with Kavita Patil, however, had objected to the application saying that the power to continue investigation cannot be taken away from the investigating agency.

The CBI claims that Peter was part of the conspiracy to kill Sheena Bora and that Indrani, Khanna and her former driver Shyamvar Rai took part in her murder. According to CBI, the motive behind murder was to gain financial benefits.
