CBI asked to reply on Peter’s bail plea
The special CBI court on Tuesday directed the investigating agency to file its reply on the bail application filed by former media baron Peter Mukerjea in the Sheena Bora murder case.
The special CBI court on Tuesday directed the investigating agency to file its reply on the bail application filed by former media baron Peter Mukerjea in the Sheena Bora murder case.
Interestingly, Peter is the first amongst the four arrested accused in this case to file for bail while the CBI is yet to file a chargesheet against him. The bail plea also has the analysis of the chargesheet filed against his wife Indrani, her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamwar Rai to show that there is no evidence against him.
A copy of the bail plea was served to the prosecution on Tuesday and the judge H.S. Mahajan adjourned hearing on the bail plea till January 16 with direction to CBI to file its reply. On the judge’s direction special public prosecutor Kavita Patil assured the court that the reply on the bail would be filed by January 16.
Peter, in his bail application filed via advocate Kushal Mor, said that he was in UK from April 23 to 26, 2012, with Vidhie (Indrani’s daughter from her marriage with Khanna), and mere phone calls between him and Indrani within this period does not suggest conspiracy.
The plea also claimed that the CBI had not found any evidence to justify his arrest, though it had his custody for 11 days and even subjected him psycho-analysis and polygraph tests. “It is the contention of the applicant herein that there is no material with the CBI to arrest and prosecute him in the said matter and in either case, there is no further justification for the applicant to remain in custody and thus the applicant is approaching this court for seeking bail,” stated his bail application.
Peter also dismissed the charge that he misled his son Rahul about Sheena’s whereabouts after her disappearance.
The CBI, while maintaining that financial transaction was the motive behind Sheena’s murder, had earlier said that Peter, during his interrogation, disclosed investments of crores of rupees made by him and Indrani and is expecting information from Interpol on the details of an account opened by Indrani in a bank in Hong Kong.
