The Kolhapur police on Saturday registered cases against the alleged attackers of Bhumata Brigade activists in Mahalaxmi Temple on April 13. A similar case was registered in Trimbakeshwar on Friday against the trustees, purohits (priests) and villagers totalling 200 to 250 persons for opposing the entry of Swarajya Mahila Sanghatna activists, including president Vanita Gatte.
The Kolhapur case was filed by police sub-inspector (PSI) Amit Venkatesh Mhaske in Juna Rajwada police station. The names of the accused were given as Kedar Munishwar, S. Munishwar, Chaitanya Ashtekar, Mayur Munishwar, Nikhil Shanbhag and his supporters, Kisan Kalyankar, Jaikumar Shinde and others.
The complaint states that the accused illegally conspired and threw haldi (turmeric), kunku (vermillion) powder and ink on Bhumata Brigade activists, including Trupti Desai with the intention of stopping their entry. It also says that the accused manhandled the women and caused danger to their life and security. The accused further manhandled the police personnel who were doing their duty and obstructed government servants.
The FIR (a copy of which is with The Asian Age) states that the case was being registered by the state and the FIR has been sent to court. Cases were registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 143, 147, 353, 336, 337, 332 and 506.
Ms Desai said that the aged man seen in the footage caught her neck. “My throat is still hurting due to his attack,” she stated. She, however, thanked the government for registering the cases. “I had requested the government to register cases suo motu, or they (activists) would have had to go to Kolhapur and file an FIR,” Ms Desai said. Meanwhile, no arrests have been made in the Trimbakeshwar case that was registered on Friday, assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Pravin Mundhe said on Saturday, adding that investigations were on.
