Four people, including a four-year-old child, were injured after a speeding Mercedes-Benz crashed into parked vehicles which then ran over them. The incident occured early on Friday when the victims were sleeping on the pavement below JJ flyover.
The accused, who ran away after the incident, was arrested by the Pydhonie police and identified as Amin Yousuf Shaikh alias Haji Amin Khan (46). Sources said the accused was an alleged aide of underworld gangster Chhota Shakeel.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday when the injured were sleeping on the pavement near Colombo junction on Mohammed Ali road near Crawford market.
The accused Amin has many other cases registered against him. In 2001, the Hyderabad police had arrested him in an Arms Act case and officials said that the case was related to the Shakeel gang.
He was also booked by the Byculla police in 2015 in an attempted murder case. The officials said that he was never arrested in the said case.
The injured have been identified as Munira Shaikh(25), Alisha Shaikh (40), Rashida Shaikh (25), Rahul Shaikh (4) and Ayesha Khan (40). All the women work as maids in households in the area.
“We were sleeping when at around 12.30 am we heard a loud sound and the next minute a car that was parked next to us ran us over,” said Munira who has been admitted to JJ Hospital with a fractured shoulder. An eyewitness revealed that the Mercedes was speeding and hit parked vehicles one of which then hit the pavement dwellers.
Police officials investigating the case said that Amin, a Dongri resident, had tea at a restaurant with his friends and then asked the owner for the car keys. He wanted to take a ride and within a few minutes after taking the steering, Amin lost control nd rammed into parked vehicles. Amin who is a contractor, escaped from the spot and was arrested by the police from near JJ Hospital. He was scared that the crowd gathered would thrash him and hence fled the spot,” said Sunil Kavlekar, senior inspector of the Pydhonie police station
A probe has revealed that Amin has been accused of killing his wife in 2000 and fled to Dubai where he met Shakeel’s aide Tariq Parveen.
Hospital authorities said that Rashida, Alisa and Rahul sustained minor injuries and were discharged after treatment. Munira is still recuperating at the hospital.
An initial test conducted on Amin has revealed that he was not drunk at the time of the incident. He has been booked for rash and negligent driving and granted bail.
