A traffic constable was beaten by two people — both brothers after they got into an altercation with him regarding a U-turn at the busy Opera House junction. This attack comes just a fortnight after traffic head constable Vilas Shinde died of injuries after he was attacked by a minor and his brother.
The incident occurred late in the evening, when traffic constable Hemant Anandrav Suryawanshi, attached to the Malabar Hill division, was posted at the Opera House junction to man the traffic at AR Rangnekat Marg. Around 7.15 pm, the constable noticed that there was a massive traffic snarl at the junction and when he went to investigate he found the cause to be a U-turn at the Dharam Palve signal.
“Constable Suryawanshi checked the problem and found that owing to many vehicles taking the U-turn at Dharam Palve signal, the traffic movement was getting affected leading to a traffic jam. To ease the traffic flow he decided to stop vehicles from taking a U-turns,” said Mumbai police spokesperson DCP Ashok Dudhe.
Soon, a cab of taxi aggregator Ola tried to take a U-turn at the signal but was stopped by Mr Suryawanshi. The cab driver allegedly started arguing with the constable and insisted on taking the U-turn.
“In the midst of all of this, the passenger intervened and abused the constable, and escalated the argument. He then called his elder brother and both of them started manhandling the constable,” said Mr Dudhe.
Sources added that the brothers beat the police officer and one of them also bit him on the arm.
The crowd then intervened and nabbed both the accused and handed them over to the Gamdevi police station. One of the accused aged 27 has been identified as Hardik Zaveri and other is his elder brother, aged 37.
The accused have been booked under sections 353, 332 of the Indian Penal Code.
