Boyfriend of slain girl held

The Virar police on Saturday arrested Sohail Shaikh, the boyfriend of 19-year-old Aishwarya Agrwal, an IT student, who was brutally hacked to death on Friday afternoon.

The Virar police on Saturday arrested Sohail Shaikh, the boyfriend of 19-year-old Aishwarya Agrwal, an IT student, who was brutally hacked to death on Friday afternoon.

Shaikh’s friend, Deepak Waghri, was arrested on Friday for killing Agrwal, a resident of Bolinj, Virar, and he was produced in a local court on Saturday evening where he was remanded in police custody till September 8.

The police had booked Waghri under the sections of the Indian Penal Code for murder and attempt to rape.

The police’s preliminary investigation has indicated that Shaikh had conspired with Waghri, following which the latter attempted to rape Agrwal. An officer, speaking on the condition of annonymity, said, “He will be brought before the court tomorrow.”

The police is going to take down the statements of Agrwal and Shaikh’s neighbours and relatives to understand the nature of their relationship.

According to police officers, Agrwal was in a relationship with Shaikh. Both the youths used to meet daily in Waghri’s house, which is situated in Jakat Naka.

On Friday, Agrwal visited Waghri’s house to meet Shaikh, as was her wont, when Waghri allegedly started pressurising her into entering a physical relationship with him. But, Agrwal turned him down and Waghri allegedly tried to rape her. Following this, a scuffle took place between the two, and Waghri picked up an axe and attacked the girl. “He hacked her ten to 12 times and she succumbed to her wounds immediately,” said an officer from the Virar police station.

Later, Shaikh reached the scene of the crime to meet Agrwal. He then went to the police station and informed the police of the incident. Acting on his complaint, the police registered a case against Waghri.

Meanwhile, the family and friends of the victim staged a candle-light protest outside Virar police station on Saturday night, demanding justice for the girl.
