One out of five college-going boys who formed a gang that allegedly stole two-wheelers in Navi Mumbai was arrested Tuesday morning. According to police, the gang has been stealing bikes purely for leisure.
Following more than 20 cases of vehicle theft being registered with Koparkhairne police station in the past one month, senior PI of the police station, Satish Gaikwad, constituted a special team to look into these cases.
“After checking CCTV footage and through sources, we came to know that two to three boys in sector 11 of Koparkhairne had recently bought new Activa bikes,” said Mr Gaikwad.
At around 7 am on Tuesday, one of the special team members saw a boy passing sector 11 of Koparkhairne on an Activa bike. The team chased the boy and stopped him for questioning. When he started giving lame excuses and said he was riding the bike so early in the morning because he wanted to learn how to ride it, the team found his behaviour suspicious. “Our team interrogated him for three hours after which he admitted that he had stolen the bike from one of the buildings in sector 11 and his gang had stolen more than eight bikes from the area,” said Mr Gaikwad. “They told the police during interrogation that they stole bikes because they liked bikes and their parents were not letting them buy any. Their parents did not know about their activities,” he added.
The boys would identify bikes with unlocked handles and tow them away manually. Seven bikes have been recovered.
