A 22-year-old man allegedly killed his elder brother (50) because the latter was not in favour of him eating non-vegetarian food.

A case of murder has been registered with the MHB police station. The incident happened in Ganpat Patil lane number 8 in Borivali (west) on Friday.

MHB police officials said the deceased Umesh Rao (50) was having dinner with his younger brother when they got into a squabble over non-vegetarian food. Umesh was reportedly not in favour of his brother eating non-vegetarian food, said the police. This was followed by a heated argument following which in a fit of rage the younger man grabbed a wooden board and started hitting Umesh till he died of the injuries.

Police said the accused was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. “The accused was under the influence of alcohol. A medical checkup has been conducted and we are looking into the matter,” said a police official from the MHB police station.

Umesh’s daughter filed a complaint with the MHB police the next day and the police arrested the accused. The neighbours also told the police that both the brothers were alcoholic and used to fight often. There was discord between them over the purchase of a room too, the neighbours said.
