Work was on at kids’ crematorium
The installation of 4G mobile towers in the city by a leading telecom company has been mired in yet another controversy. Human skeletons and bones were extricated during excavation works carried out for the tower works at the children’s burial ground at Chandanwadi crematorium on Thursday.
Taking a serious note of this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has filed an FIR under the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning (MRTP) act. The civic body has also issued a stop work notice to the agency in this case.
According to local residents, the Chandandwadi crematorium is managed by the Hindu Burning and Burial Ground (HBBG) Committee, which had given permission for installation works. The excavation started after the compound wall of the crematorium was demolished. However, as it dug out the bones and skulls of small kids, the word spread which led to tension in the area. Members of political parties rushed to the spot as the crowd burgeoned.
An official of the HBBG committee admitted that they had given permission to install a mobile tower at the crematorium. “However, the company was supposed to take all other permissions, including from the municipality. The spot given for installing the tower was also different. Taking note of this, we have decided to terminate the contract.”
BMC opposition leader Devendra Amberkar said, “It is a sensitive issue, which has hurt people’s sentiments. The BMC should take strict action against the company concerned for violating the norms. The municipal commissioner has assured us action under the MRTP Act,” he added.
According to civic officials, the company was not given any permission for the installation of 4G mobile towers work at the Chandanwadi crematorium. Satya Prakash Singh, assistant commissioner of the C ward, said, “No permission was taken from the ward for this work. We have issued a stop-work notice to the owner and occupier of the burial ground. Action will also be initiated against the agency under the MRTP Act for carrying out the work.”
