Working women in the city have reason for cheer, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) having proposed amenities for them such as hostels, skills development centres, and vending areas in municipal markets in its revised draft development plan (DP) 2034. The draft DP has proposed setting up a hostel and skills development centre for women in each of the 24 administrative wards in the city. It has also proposed vending areas for women in municipal markets.

“Keeping in mind the needs of working women in the city, we have proposed 24 women’s hostels and 24 skills development centres in the revised draft DP. This will help solve the accommodation problem of working women and also enhance their capacity development,” said a senior civic official.

The revised draft DP mandates keeping at least 1,000 square-metre space for multi-purpose housing for working women. It also proposes keeping 500 square-metre land in each administrative ward for an Aadhar Kendra and skills development centre for needy women. With these provisions, working women will be able to get accommodation in the areas where they work. The official said it will lead to resolving housing problems of working women who did not own a residence in the city.

The skills development centres and livelihood centres have been proposed with a view to developing professional skills among needy women.
