The Bombay high court on Tuesday asked the state government to file an affidavit and inform the court why it de-reserved a piece of land that was reserved for police housing.
The division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Amjad Syed sought clarification from the state while hearing public interest litigation (PIL) filed by scribe turned social activist Ketan Tirodkar. His petition has alleged that plots of land reserved for housing policemen were fraudulently allotted to housing societies of legislators and bureaucrats.
The PIL was filed in respect to Vasundhara Society in Juhu claiming that this land was given to bureaucrats although it was reserved for policemen’s housing. There was another similar PIL pertaining to the Worli Sagar Co-operative Society. Mr Tirodkar relied on a reply by the state’s home department under the Right to Information Act.
The PIL pertaining to Worli Sagar Society alleged that the state government had acquired plots in prime areas of the city in 1988 and promised to provide another piece of land in suburban Andheri for policemen, but the land was never handed over.
Three co-operative housing societies, namely Sukhada, Shubada and Poorna, which came up on six plots of land in Worli are located in the Worli Sagar Complex.
