The Bombay high court on Thursday asked the state government to send mobile hospital vans to tribal areas until such time that gynaecologists and paediatricians are appointed in these areas. The court also asked the government to submit the report of the core committee that was constituted to solve this issue.
A division bench headed by Justice V.M. Kanade issued orders after hearing a PIL filed by Purnima Upadhyay and others, seeking basic amenities in tribal areas. The government pleader on Thursday informed the high court that there was no coordination between government departments, which was leading to huge difficulties in solving issues faced by tribals. While the work had been done to some extent acting on the court’s orders, hearing on the issue was adjourned for a long time and, hence, the implementation of the court orders had witnessed a slowdown. The government pleader, however, informed the court that the state was putting in efforts to provide medical assistance in tribal areas. Following this, the bench directed the state to submit the report of the meeting conducted by the core committee formed to solve the issue.
In the past, the court had observed that several matters required coordinated action among different state government departments and in the absence of a regulatory mechanism, inordinate delays were occurring in the implementation of schemes. It directed a core committee be constituted to monitor issues faced by tribals as well as the implementation of welfare schemes in 11 sensitive tribal projects in the state.
