The Bombay high court on Monday asked the state government to reply whether it had set up a state-level mechanism to deal with disputes between parents and school management. The move came after the high court only last week took cognisance of a letter written by the father of a 12-year-old boy against HVB Global Academy School, Marine Lines.
According to the child’s father, his 12-year-old was expelled from school because he objected to paying Rs 50,000 in cash to the school for purchase of uniform and other stationery. He said that initially, he paid Rs 1,09,000 in fees after which the school demanded an additional Rs 50,000 for uniform and other stationery to which he objected. Thereafter, school management threatened him and his wife and one day, forcibly took his wife’s signature on a blank paper and expelled his son from school. He further said in his letter that after approaching government authorities and sharing his grievance with them, they ordered the school to take back his son but the school still did not relent.
During the hearing, Justice V.M. Kanade and Justice M.S. Sonak asked the state to reply whether it had put in place any mechanism to help resolve disputes between parents and school authorities. Last year, another bench of the HC had directed the state to frame rules and regulations to address such issues. On Monday, the court asked the state to reply whether it had complied with the order or not.
