A month-and-a-half after Bombay high court directed four youths to do community service in return for quashing the FIR against them in a case of molestation and attempt to murder, the same HC bench on Tuesday directed 17 other youths to sweep the municipal school in Thane district and Mira Road Railway Station if they wanted the court to quash FIR against them in a case of assault.

A division bench of Justice R.V. More and Justice V.L. Achiliya directed these youths, who had registered cross complaints against each other, to do community service for three months. As there were two sets of applicants and cross-complaints against both, the court directed one group to sweep and clean a municipal school every Sunday for three months while the other group was asked to sweep Mira Road Railway Station every Sunday for the same period.

The bench also asked the stationmaster of Mira Road Station and principal of the Thane school to monitor and supervise the youths and inform local police about compliance of court order.

The case concerns one set of eight friends who had gone to Fonseca Resort in Gorai on April 4 last year to celebrate Easter and another set of seven friends occupying other rooms in the same resort. The two groups got embroiled in a fight and attacked each other with the Gorai police station registering a case in the matter. All the accused, in their early 20s, approached the HC, seeking to quash the case, stating that they had settled the dispute among themselves.

While the judges said they would quash the FIR if the youths successfully did community service for three months, the bench also expressed its displeasure over the behaviour of these youths and said they should realise they are the future of this country and their act is not that of responsible citizens. The court said they were free to enjoy but at the same time, should draw a limit to what is not right.
