Board fails to inform centres about practicals

Exam centres entrusted with the task of conducting the supplementary exams of the upcoming Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams have been caught on the wrong foot after the Maharashtra State Board

Exam centres entrusted with the task of conducting the supplementary exams of the upcoming Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams have been caught on the wrong foot after the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) failed to inform them of the practical exams they had to conduct for students of junior colleges in their areas though the dates have been announced on the board website. The board said intimation letters to conduct practical exams were sent to the exam centres on Saturday.

According to the administrator of a junior college in the western suburbs, the board in its exam schedule announced that practical exams would be held from June 28 to July 7 at the central exam centres in each area and students were to report there on the said dates. “Students from all the colleges in our area started sending their students to our college, which is the main exam centre from June 28. As we have not received any instructions from the board we had no option but to send the students back,” said the administrator.

The administrator further added the board was not responding on the helpline. “We tried calling the board office at Vashi and even the head office at Pune, but there was no response. We asked students to check everyday for instructions from their board,” said the administrator.

On its part, the board refuted the allegations and said that the helplines were functional and some centres had been given instructintons with regard to conducting the practical exams. Dattatray Jagtap, chairman of Mumbai division of MSBSHSE, said, “The Centre has to conduct the practical exams between June 28 to July 7. The intimation letter was dispatched to the concerned centres on July 2. The exams will be conducted before July 7,” said Mr Jagtap.

The supplementary exams are being conducted by the board in July rather than October/November to ensure that students do not lose a year and can clear the board exams, the results of which will be declared in August. The written exams will be conducted as per the timetable announced by the board on its website.
