BMC takes over 60 open spaces

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken over 60 open spaces in the city so far.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken over 60 open spaces in the city so far. The possession of the remaining 156 plots, which have been issued notices as their agreement had expired, will be taken in a phase-wise manner.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the state Legislative Council on Wednesday that the BMC has been maintaining the open plots that had been taken over. The civic body has also started the tender process to appoint contractors for the maintenance of these plots.

The issue was raised by Leader of Opposition Dhananjay Munde, who asked about the state government’s policy to allot these open plots to nearby schools. He also asked what measures the BMC was taking to maintain these plots.

In his written reply, Mr Fadnavis said educational institutes could also apply to the BMC to take these plots on an adoption basis.

The civic body aims to take over 216 open plots in the city that were given to private parties under the previous adoption policy.

After the new open space policy was passed in the BMC, Mr Fadnavis, taking note of public wrath, had asked the civic body to review the policy.

The chif minister also asked the BMC to take back 216 open plots that were given on the previous adoption policy and whose agreement is not valid anymore.

The list of these plots, released by the civic body, includes many prominent recreational grounds and playgrounds (RGPGs), which are maintained by politicians’ trusts, corporates and gymkhanas.
