City corporators have demanded that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) use topmix permeable concrete technology to counter water-logging, which is a persistent problem in several areas during monsoon. They said the technology would prevent water-logging on roads in the rainy season.
Mumbai, which has a saucer-like topography, witnesses severe water-logging during monsoon. Of late, even a small downpour triggers flooding in several areas. Corporators said the concretisation of roads was one of the major factors leading to water-logging.
In a notice of motion tabled in the civic general body meeting, Nationalist Congress Party corporator Dr Saeeda Khan said concretisation of roads was having adverse effect on the capacity to absorb water, due to which flooding occurs. She demanded that the BMC use topmix permeable concrete technology to reduce flooding.
“To ensure pothole-free roads, the BMC has started concretisation of several major roads. However, it has its adverse effects as rain water does not get absorbed by these roads. Due to this, water-logging takes place, throwing city life out of gear,” said Dr Khan.
“It is necessary to use topmix permeable concrete technology for the development of roads in Mumbai. This will ensure that water is drained off from these roads and there will be no potholes. It will also help in increasing the underground water level,” she added.
Topmix permeable is a fast draining concrete pavement solution that rapidly directs storm water off streets, parking surfaces, driveways and walkways. This minimises the cost and ensures long-term maintenance for local authorities and developers of storm water management.
“The notice of motion would be tabled in the civic house for approval and if approved would be sent to concerned authorities for further action,” said a civic official.
